There is debate on whether JPII should be referred to as "the Great" or "the Good" now that he has passed on to the ether. This Pope's reign has certainly been great, whether you agree with his beliefs or not, this is almost inarguable, but the man himself would probably be more comfortable with the term "the Good".
John Paul II, while commanding the audience of most of the worlds leaders at one time or another, had a quiet resilience about him, and a passive demeanor. He lead through quiet reflection and strong resolve. A moniker like "Great" would be pretentious for such a man. But this is just my opinion.
