Have you read the Project for a New American Century? No? Well, its good reading. It centers around a proposal that a group of Neo-Cons sent to President Clinton in the late 1990's that would secure America's power in the post cold war world.
Clinton didn't act on it as it went against his foreign policy. You know, actual diplomacy.
So the Neo-Cons bided their time and waited for a President who shares their view of the world.
Enter George W. Bush.
Within the PNAC proposal, the wish, for lack of a better term, was for a "Pearl Harbor" type of event that would allow their plans to be accelerate faster.
9/11.
Not to intimate that the Neo-Cons had anything to do with that tragic day, but it is an eerie coincidence that a "Pearl Harbor" type of event did exactly what they wanted it to do, which was accelerate their plans to overthrow Saddam and establish a power position in the region beyond that of Israel.
Now we are eyeing the rogue state of Iran. This seems to be a continuation of the Neo-Con aim, and I fear it falls in line with the Theo-Con aim. You see, fanatical Christians and Muslims dream of the same goal, the destruction of Israel. Both for different reasons, but the goal is the same. For Theo-Cons of the Christian ilk, the destruction of Israel will bring about the return of Christ, and all of the faithfull will float up to heaven. For radical Muslims, the Zionists are illegally on holy land in Palestine, and their presence is a blasphemy to them.
Which comes to the meat of the issue. The Neo-Con dream of a Pax Americana was used by the Theo-Cons from both the Christian and Muslim extremists to create a legitimate threat to Israel and create a conflict in that region that could unravel everything. Dick Cheney, the founder of PNAC, and the rest of his co-horts dreamed of a stronger America, while religious extremists used their hunger for power and created a crisis which seems will end in Israel fighting Hezbullah, Syria, and Iran. Europe will come to Israel's aid, as will the U.S.
World War III.
The conservative talking heads have been talking up the possibility of WWIII since the Israel-Hezbullah conflict began, and you can almost see the saliva dripping from their mouths. The sad thing is that they actually want this to happen! I equate it to listening to a Fundy Christian talk about Armegeddon. They may talk about it with an sense of foreboding, but you can tell they are looking forward to it. And why not, they are going to heaven, right? Make no mistake, Armegeddon and WWIII and the Middle-East Crisis go hand in hand for Theo-Cons.
Pretty Scary.
